Early complement components enhance neutralization of Chlamydia trachomatis infectivity by human sera.
Immunoglobulin G in human serum neutralizes chlamydial infectivity in vitro. Complement-intact, C5-depleted, and C8-depleted human serum all have significantly more neutralizing activity than serum heated to inactivate early components of complement. Cobra venom factor, an analog of human C3b, enhances neutralization of antichlamydial immunoglobulin G in the absence of early complement components.

Neutralization of Chlamydia trachomatis was assayed by the decrease in inclusion-forming units in baby hamster kidney cells grown in culture. Five percent fresh guinea pig sera increased neutralization titers of rabbit antisera 100- to 1,000-fold but had no effect when normal rabbit sera were tested. Neutralization of a type A or B trachoma isolate was strain specific. Neutralization by human e...
متن کاملChlamydia trachomatis major outer membrane protein variants escape neutralization by both monoclonal antibodies and human immune sera.
We have identified two families of novel Chlamydia trachomatis isolates with amino acid changes within the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) variable domains: one family of Da, D*, and D- and one family of Ia and I-. In order to determine whether these MOMP variants can escape antibody neutralization of infectivity, we tested both the D and I prototype strains and the variants in a complement...
متن کاملComplement activation and stimulation of chemotaxis by Chlamydia trachomatis.
The stimulus for the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) in acute chlamydial infection was studied in vitro by examining the chemotaxigenic effect of L2 and DE Chlamydia trachomatis elementary bodies (EB) upon the plasma of three healthy donors. In each individual experiment, chemotactic response was assessed with PMNs and plasma from the same respective donor, and no specific anti...
متن کاملEarly Neonatal Infection by Chlamydia trachomatis
Chlamydia trachomatis infection in pregnant women is a critical condition because the infection can induce an ectopic gestation, preterm delivery, premature rupture of membranes, and chorioamnionitis. Furthermore, the newborn may become infected by vertical transmission; however, at present there are evidences that intrauterine infections can occur. Here we examine this evidence and describe th...
